It takes approximately two minutes for Cadence and Mikayla to hit it off. Mikayla is four years old, loves princesses, and has a moon bounce in her basement. This pretty much makes them friends for life.
The two younger girls, Juliet and Mikenzie (who are about two weeks apart) also get chummy pretty quickly.
Julie and Davis are amazing hosts who really know how to do it up right. If we didn’t have the Myrtle Beach place booked already, we might’ve spent the entire vacation in Burke, VA with the Mays. We feast on a delicious meal of ribs, salad and French fries with a sampling of microbrews from the Sweetwater Tavern (we think?), with brownies and ice cream for dessert.

Mikayla and Cadence have a fun evening filled with dress-up, the moon bounce, Candyland, and The Jungle Book.

They (almost) have a sleepover in Mikayla’s room. Cady ends up getting up to “go potty” several times, and finally comes down to the basement around 4 a.m. to sleep with the rest of the family.
The adults have a fabulous time. Davis bests Craig in two out of three rounds of backgammon. I, against my better judgment, imbibe in a southern specialty known as Firefly, which is basically straight vodka but tastes like sweet tea. We all fumble our way through a game of Rumplestilskin [not actual name], which Davis mercifully ends up winning. The night is rounded off with scrumptious nachos, courtesy of Julie, and Emmett Swimming, courtesy of Virginia Tech nostalgia.

As you can see, things got a bit silly as the night wore on. We brought Mikayla a nice pair of Cinderella socks…Davis couldn’t resist trying them on, and I have to say, they look quite magical.

The visit is topped off in the morning with chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes, more dress up and moon bounce, and, by all accounts, an unmatched time with special people. We hope to start a tradition of family vacations together, and truly wish we weren’t separated by 470 miles on a regular basis. Our heartfelt thanks to the Mays for such a fantastic visit.
